Yasser Al-Misehal has resigned as president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation following the Green Falcons’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Saudi Arabia finished bottom of Group H with two points after drawing 1-1 with Uruguay, playing out a goalless draw against Cape Verde, and suffering a 4-0 defeat to Spain.

Announcing his decision on X, Al-Misehal accepted responsibility for the team’s early elimination and apologised to fans, saying the result fell short of expectations.

He said stepping down would allow the federation to begin “a new chapter” rather than wait until the end of his current term.

Al-Misehal had led the federation for seven years and played a key role in Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

Saudi Arabia’s World Cup campaign followed months of poor form, which led to the dismissal of French coach Hervé Renard earlier this year. The country has invested heavily in football in recent years, attracting global stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema to the Saudi Pro League.
