The filmmaker insists there is no legal dispute involving him, Golden Effects, or First Bank over the production of his acclaimed Netflix project.
Nigerian filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has denied reports alleging that he owes First Bank ₦5 billion, describing the claims as false, misleading, and unfounded.
Afolayan said there is no legal dispute involving him, his production company, Golden Effects, or First Bank, urging the public to disregard the reports.
The award-winning filmmaker also addressed claims surrounding his hit film Anikulápó, clarifying that the project was produced under a straightforward co-production agreement with Netflix.
According to him, the arrangement with the streaming giant was transparent and did not result in any outstanding financial obligations.
“There is no legal dispute involving me, Golden Effects, or First Bank. Anikulápó was produced through a co-production with Netflix under a straightforward agreement, and no outstanding payment is owed to anyone,” Afolayan stated.
His response comes amid growing speculation on social media over an alleged ₦5 billion debt linked to the production of the movie.
Anikulápó, which debuted in 2022 before expanding into a Netflix series, remains one of Afolayan’s most successful projects and has earned widespread acclaim for its storytelling and cultural impact.
