President describes late cleric as a unifying religious leader whose contributions to Islam, education and interfaith harmony will inspire generations.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Islamic scholar and community leader, Imam Tijani Olubodun Shehu Gbajabiamila, describing him as a respected cleric whose life was devoted to service, spiritual guidance and the promotion of peace.
In a condolence message, President Tinubu said he had the privilege of knowing the late Imam from his early years and during his time as Governor of Lagos State, noting that he benefited immensely from his wisdom, counsel and unwavering commitment to Islam and humanity.
The President described Imam Gbajabiamila as a beacon of spiritual guidance who dedicated his life to preaching the teachings of the Holy Quran while encouraging education, personal development and moral values among Muslims.
He noted that beyond his religious duties, the late Imam distinguished himself as a teacher, counsellor, mediator and community leader who worked tirelessly to resolve disputes, promote social justice and advance community development through various Islamic organisations.
President Tinubu also highlighted the cleric’s enduring commitment to promoting interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence among people of different religious backgrounds, describing it as one of his greatest legacies.
Imam Gbajabiamila held several leadership positions during his lifetime, including Director of Islamic Affairs of the Zumuratul Islamiyyah Youth Association and Vice Chairman of the Council of Chief Imams and Alfas, Lagos Division. He also served as a trustee and adviser to several Islamic organisations.
The President said the late Imam’s legacy as a unifying figure and respected religious leader would continue to inspire generations.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Gbajabiamila family, the Government and people of Lagos State, as well as the late cleric’s numerous students, admirers and followers across the world.
