Lawmakers question utilisation of monthly security allocations following deadly attacks that claimed lives and disrupted communities.
The Kano State House of Assembly has launched an investigation into the utilisation of monthly security allocations released to the state’s 44 local government councils amid renewed bandit attacks across parts of the state.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Gwarmai, during plenary presided over by Speaker Isma’il Falgore.
Gwarmai described the worsening security situation in Tsanyawa Local Government Area, lamenting that repeated attacks by suspected bandits have left residents living in fear while disrupting farming, education, healthcare services and other socio-economic activities.
He disclosed that the latest attack occurred in the Yan Cibi community of Yan Kamaye Ward, where armed bandits allegedly attempted to abduct residents and rustle cattle before they were repelled by security operatives.
The lawmaker said the attack claimed the life of a community leader and vigilante member, Yusuf Adamu, while several residents sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
While commending the military and the police for recovering a significant number of the stolen cattle, Gwarmai noted that the difficult terrain along the Kano-Katsina border prevented security personnel from pursuing the fleeing attackers.
He questioned the effectiveness of the monthly security allocations reportedly released to local government councils, arguing that frontline security operatives continue to face serious logistical challenges despite the availability of the funds.
“It is imperative to investigate how these security allocations are being utilised because the operational challenges facing security personnel do not reflect the resources reportedly released for that purpose,” he said.
Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously mandated the relevant House committee to investigate the utilisation of the security funds to ensure transparency and accountability in their management.
The Assembly also urged both the Kano State and Federal Governments to strengthen security operations in border communities through the deployment of additional personnel, improved logistics and proactive measures aimed at preventing further attacks and curbing the spread of banditry across the state.
