Union gives Gombe Government, university management until October to implement salary and welfare agreements.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) branch, has suspended its planned indefinite strike after receiving commitments from the Gombe State Government and university management to address its outstanding welfare demands.

The decision was reached at a congress meeting held on Friday, August 21, 2026, at the ASUU Secretariat on the university campus.

In a resolution signed by the branch Chairperson, Dr Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Dr Aliyu Shelleng, the union said the industrial action was suspended to give the government and university management time to fulfil their promises.

The suspension is subject to the full implementation of agreements on the new salary structure and payment of outstanding entitlements by the end of October 2026.

ASUU said its decision followed a letter from the Gombe State Government on the implementation of the new salary scale and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university management outlining plans for the payment of accumulated arrears and other entitlements.

The union, however, warned that it would commence a total and indefinite strike without further notice if the commitments were not fulfilled by the October deadline.

Academic activities at Gombe State University are therefore expected to continue without immediate disruption, pending the implementation of the agreements.
