President urges greater domestic gas supply as NLNG says Train 7 will increase cooking gas capacity by 50 per cent.
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) to deepen domestic gas utilisation, tackle gas flaring and ensure that the country’s abundant gas resources translate into more affordable energy for Nigerians.
President Tinubu gave the charge on Wednesday when he received the NLNG Board of Directors and Executive Leadership, led by Managing Director Adeleye Falade, at the State House in Abuja.
The President said Nigeria’s gas resources would have little value if they remained underground or failed to improve the lives of citizens. He urged NLNG to balance efforts to increase revenue from international markets with measures to expand domestic gas availability and reduce energy costs.
President Tinubu also called on the company to convert gas currently being flared, which he described as an environmental liability, into an economic resource that could benefit consumers.
While commending NLNG’s efforts to expand its operations, the President assured the company of government support and incentives needed to increase its capacity, stressing that such growth must ultimately benefit the Nigerian economy and citizens.
Speaking after the meeting, Falade said NLNG’s commitment to domestic energy security remained unchanged, noting that all of the company’s cooking gas production is currently supplied to the Nigerian market.
He said the ongoing Train 7 project would further strengthen domestic supply, with its completion expected to increase NLNG’s cooking gas capacity by 50 per cent.
Falade disclosed that about 16,000 people were currently working on the Train 7 construction site, while the project had also generated opportunities for businesses and construction companies involved in the expansion.
He said NLNG would continue to focus on operational efficiency, revenue generation, employment creation, support for host communities and its contribution to Nigeria’s broader economic development.
