The leadership crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation has taken a new turn, with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football set to send a joint delegation to Nigeria to assess the situation.
The two football governing bodies are expected to visit Abuja and meet key stakeholders over the recent mass resignation of senior NFF officials and its implications for the administration of Nigerian football.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several members of the federation’s Executive Committee resigned on August 27, throwing the leadership structure into uncertainty.
The development has also cast doubt on the NFF’s proposed September 27 elective congress, with FIFA and CAF opting to assess the situation before taking any decision.
The proposed delegation is expected to meet NFF officials, members of the NFF Congress, the electoral committee and representatives of the National Sports Commission to establish what led to the resignations and determine the way forward.
FIFA has reportedly urged stakeholders not to draw conclusions, stressing that no final decision has been taken on the crisis pending its assessment.
The outcome of the FIFA-CAF visit could determine whether the NFF proceeds with a new electoral process or requires further administrative steps to restore stability to Nigerian football.
