Two-Storey Structure Partially Collapses During Manual Demolition in Aboru
One person has died and two others were injured after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition partially collapsed in the Aboru area of Alimosho, Lagos State, early Thursday.
The incident occurred at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, prompting the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to deploy its Alpha Eagle Response Team from Cappa, Oshodi, at about 12:56 a.m.
LASEMA said preliminary findings showed that the building collapsed while manual demolition work was ongoing, trapping several workers beneath the debris.
A coordinated rescue operation involving LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) rescued two adult males alive from the rubble.
The survivors received first aid at the scene before being taken to a nearby health facility for further treatment.
However, one adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure.
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, commiserated with the deceased’s family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He urged developers and property owners to comply with building regulations and engage certified professionals for demolition and construction activities.
Oke-Osanyintolu also urged residents to report unsafe or suspicious building activities through the 767 and 112 emergency numbers.
Security agencies and community leaders are assisting emergency responders to ensure safe access to the site and the conclusion of rescue operations.
The latest incident adds to concerns over building collapses in Lagos, with previous cases linked by experts to structural defects, substandard materials, poor supervision and violations of approved building plans.
