Speaker Egbedun Demands Sustained Waste Management to Prevent Flooding, Protect Public Health
The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has directed the Ministry of Environment to urgently clear heaps of refuse from major roads across the state.
Egbedun also ordered the ministry to clear blocked drainages and waterways, calling for a comprehensive and sustained approach to environmental sanitation.
The Speaker gave the directives on Tuesday during a meeting with the Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, and top ministry officials as part of the Assembly’s oversight activities.
He called for urgent action to remove accumulated refuse from major roads and clear neglected drainages across the state.
Egbedun said effective drainage systems were essential to preventing flooding, protecting lives and property and maintaining a healthy environment.
He also directed relevant agencies to ensure proper evacuation and disposal of refuse in major towns and cities, markets, residential areas and other public spaces.
The Speaker stressed that waste management must go beyond occasional clean-up exercises and become a sustained and coordinated responsibility.
He assured that the Assembly would continue to monitor government agencies to ensure they respond effectively to the environmental needs of residents.
Responding, Adejoorin and heads of relevant agencies briefed the lawmakers on the ministry’s activities, challenges and ongoing interventions in environmental sanitation across the state.
