Agency Records 182 Cases, Says 15 Suspects Arrested Over Mass Illnesses in Odigbo
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed the presence of methanol, a deadly toxic substance, in samples of locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions linked to mass illnesses and deaths in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
As of September 17, 2026, NAFDAC said 48 people had died while 182 cases had been recorded in connection with the incident.
The agency also disclosed that 15 people had been arrested as investigations into the outbreak continue.
NAFDAC issued the update following reports of widespread illnesses and deaths among residents who consumed the suspected concoctions.
The agency said laboratory analysis of samples confirmed the presence of methanol, which can cause severe poisoning and death when consumed.
