NCSU Recognises President for Commitment to Workers’ Welfare

The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has conferred its highest honour, the Shield Award, on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The award was presented on Monday as part of activities marking the union’s 114th anniversary. It was received on the President’s behalf by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, at Merit House in Abuja.

NCSU National President, Comrade Oluwole Sunday, described Tinubu as “a true shield of the Nigerian worker,” saying his policies had prioritised the interests of the labour force.

The union said the President’s interventions had boosted morale in the civil service and demonstrated concern for workers’ welfare.

Keyamo, who was also recognised by the union for his solidarity with Nigerian workers, praised the NCSU as the country’s oldest trade union.

The minister highlighted President Tinubu’s approval of ₦36 billion for former aviation workers and the new salary structure for workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), following a relativity dispute that had lasted more than 15 years.

Keyamo said the President had also approved a reduction in the statutory minimum-wage review period from five years to three years after signing the new minimum wage into law in 2024.

He said negotiations for a new minimum wage would therefore begin in 2027.

“Like we said in our song, the struggle for our workers will continue,” Keyamo said.

The NCSU has 84 affiliates and has a history spanning more than a century.
