Presidency Says Abuja Military Housing Project Shows How Subsidy Savings Are Being Redirected to Infrastructure

The Presidency says the ongoing Phase II of the Bola Tinubu Barracks in Abuja will provide accommodation for more than 1,000 soldiers and their families when completed.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Dr Sunday Dare, said the project was among the infrastructure investments being funded with resources freed up following the removal of fuel subsidy.

Dare spoke on Tuesday when a Presidential Media Team, including Senior Special Assistant on Digital and New Media, Otega Ogra, inspected the project.

The new military community is expected to serve more than 6,000 people and includes 30 family quarters, six blocks of senior officers’ accommodation, an Army club, MAMI market, bridges, drainage systems and other supporting infrastructure.

Dare said the project reflected the Federal Government’s decision to redirect public resources towards infrastructure and other long-term assets following the removal of fuel subsidy.

The Presidency said the development is also aimed at improving the welfare of military personnel and providing better living conditions for soldiers and their families.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, is overseeing a broader programme of military infrastructure and welfare projects, with similar construction and expansion works reported in Ekiti, Ebonyi and Osun states.

During the inspection, Ogra highlighted the economic activities generated by the project, noting that engineers, artisans, labourers, technicians, suppliers and other service providers were benefiting from the construction work.

The Army had commenced Phase II of the barracks project in December 2025 as part of efforts to address accommodation gaps and improve personnel welfare.

The Presidency said the project forms part of wider investments in military welfare, infrastructure, equipment, training and operational capacity.
