Seyi-Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices of the country’s founding heroes and remain united in the face of current challenges.

Governor Makinde made the call on Thursday during the 66th Independence Anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of the nation’s founding fathers.

Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” Governor Makinde said the anniversary provided an opportunity for sober reflection on the challenges confronting Nigeria and Oyo State.

He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and democratic principles, noting that independence had given Nigerians the opportunity to govern themselves.

The governor also called for national unity, saying Nigeria’s diversity, with more than 250 ethnic groups, should be a source of strength rather than division.

“We must appreciate our heroes past for what they did to achieve and attain independence in 1960. Independence was earned through their sacrifices and countless struggles,” Governor Makinde said.

He also highlighted what he described as the achievements of his administration since 2019, particularly in education, security, sports, business and infrastructure.

On security, he said the establishment of the Amotekun Corps had strengthened collaboration with other security agencies in maintaining peace across the state.

Governor Makinde also cited road construction, healthcare facilities, education infrastructure and the Light Up Oyo initiative among the projects implemented across the state’s five zones.

He thanked residents for their cooperation and support and congratulated Nigerians on the Independence Day celebration.

The event featured a march past, cultural displays and presentation of prizes, with government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries in attendance.
