NUNSA, NANS Appeal for Clemency as University Plans Official Response

Madonna University has reportedly expelled a 500-level nursing student and suspended other students involved in a viral video showing them dancing on the premises of its Elele campus.

The video, captioned in Pidgin English, “No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now,” was uploaded in August and later circulated widely on social media. A 15-second version published by Yabaleftonline on September 1 reportedly garnered more than 1.7 million views on X by Saturday.

Medical influencer and TikTok creator Nurse Girma (@nurse_girma) drew attention to the video and launched an appeal for the university to reconsider the sanctions. He said the university Senate had issued an expulsion letter to the student who owned the account and suspension letters to other students involved.

Girma appealed to the university to “temper justice with mercy,” noting that the affected student was reportedly in her final year of study.

The disciplinary action has sparked mixed reactions online, with some users supporting the university’s decision and others describing the expulsion as excessive.

The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students’ Association (NUNSA) said it had begun discussions with relevant authorities to seek a review of the sanctions.

NANS President Akinteye Afeez also appealed to the university for clemency, arguing that expulsion at the final stage of the students’ studies could have lasting consequences for their education and careers.

The Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Madonna University, Chima Achu, told Sunday PUNCH that the institution would issue an official statement on the matter on Monday.
