Former Oyo Assembly Majority Leader Michael Okunlade has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general election in Oyo State.
Okunlade, who currently serves as the Oyo State Chairman of the SDP, secured the party’s ticket through a consensus arrangement adopted during the party’s congress.
The development means former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Saheed Oladele, was unable to clinch the SDP governorship ticket despite recently defecting to the party.
Reports indicated that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the congress alongside party stakeholders and delegates.
Oladele had resigned from the APC in April, citing concerns over what he described as the exclusion of young people from decision-making processes within the party.
