Governor says payment reflects commitment to justice, transparency and compassionate governance amid ongoing infrastructure development.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday presented over N3.1 billion in compensation to more than 300 property owners whose lands were acquired for major infrastructure projects across the state.
Speaking at the compensation presentation ceremony in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said the exercise demonstrated his administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency and the protection of citizens’ rights in line with the provisions of the Land Use Act.
“Today’s exercise is not charity; it is justice. It is not a favour; it is the rightful entitlement of every verified project-affected person whose property was acquired for public purpose,” the governor said.
According to him, all compensation claims underwent a rigorous process, including enumeration, professional valuation and title verification, to ensure payments reached legitimate beneficiaries.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the acquired properties would facilitate the construction of roads, schools and other public infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of life for millions of residents.
“Behind every parcel of land is a family, a livelihood and a story. Development must always have a human face, and that is the principle guiding this administration,” he added.
The governor acknowledged the sacrifices made by affected property owners and assured them that the government remains committed to treating citizens with compassion and dignity.
He also advised beneficiaries to invest their compensation wisely in ventures that would provide long-term benefits for their families rather than spending the funds on non-essential items.
Sanwo-Olu further urged residents not to offer bribes to government officials, commending civil servants involved in the exercise for carrying out their responsibilities professionally.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat praised the beneficiaries for their patience and reiterated the state government’s commitment to people-centred governance.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, Kamal Olowosago, described the exercise as another demonstration of the government’s dedication to fairness, accountability and the rule of law in land administration.
He noted that the latest disbursement follows a similar compensation exercise held in December 2024 and reflects the administration’s consistency in meeting its statutory obligations.
“Your sacrifices are contributing to critical infrastructure that will improve the lives of millions of Lagos residents today and for generations to come,” Olowosago told the beneficiaries.
The permanent secretary also commended officials of the Lands Bureau for ensuring a transparent and credible compensation process.
