Nigeria Democratic Congress

Party says aspirants had equal opportunities as leadership moves to reconcile aggrieved members.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dismissed allegations of candidate imposition, insisting that its recently concluded primary elections were conducted through consultation, consensus-building and democratic participation.

In a statement signed by National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, the party maintained that its national leadership did not impose candidates on any state or constituency, stressing that aspirants were encouraged to engage with caucus leaders, stakeholders and grassroots members throughout the selection process.

The party noted that where disagreements arose over stakeholder recommendations, aspirants were allowed to test their popularity through grassroots primaries, ensuring what it described as a fair and transparent process.

The NDC also referenced the involvement of key South-East leaders associated with its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying they helped coordinate consultations and consensus-building within the region.

While acknowledging complaints from some aspirants, the party said all grievances have been referred to its appeal panel and leadership for review. It also announced plans to begin a reconciliation process aimed at fostering unity and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

According to the NDC, the approach reflects its commitment to internal democracy, inclusiveness and respect for established leadership structures.
