Government warns defaulters to provide waste bins, use accredited collectors and pay disposal fees or face sanctions.
The Oyo State Government has announced the commencement of a house-to-house enforcement exercise requiring every residential and commercial property to provide waste bins, giving residents and property owners until September 1, 2026, to comply before sanctions begin.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, disclosed the directive while briefing journalists in Ibadan, saying the initiative is part of the state’s renewed efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and improve waste management.

According to the commissioner, every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and plaza must provide waste bins appropriate to the size of the property, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.
He said residents and business owners are also required to engage only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and evacuation, warning that anyone using unapproved waste collectors or disposing of refuse through unauthorised means would face legal consequences.
Aderinto advised residents experiencing challenges with waste collection or those uncertain about accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for guidance.
He further disclosed that enforcement teams would verify evidence of payment of monthly waste evacuation fees during inspections, stressing that compliance includes not only providing waste bins and engaging accredited PSPs but also maintaining clean surroundings as part of the state’s daily environmental sanitation programme.
