Ruling party also secures 319 councillorship seats as opposition parties boycott election.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has won all 20 chairmanship seats in the Bauchi State local government elections held on Monday.

The Chairperson of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Jummai Abubakar, announced the results on Monday night, declaring APM candidates winners of all the chairmanship positions and 319 councillorship seats.

Candidates of four other political parties won the remaining four councillorship seats, with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP) each securing a seat.

Abubakar said the election was conducted independently and that the declared winners secured the highest number of valid votes in their respective constituencies and met the applicable legal requirements.

The results came after opposition parties under the Coalition of Opposition Parties announced a boycott of the election, alleging that the exercise was designed to favour the ruling APM.

However, Governor Bala Mohammed, after casting his vote, described the election as peaceful and said the withdrawal of some political parties would not affect its legitimacy.

The Bauchi State Government had declared Monday a work-free day to allow residents, including civil servants and workers in the banking sector, to participate in the election.
