The Federal Government has issued a seven-day flood alert, warning residents across 33 states of possible riverine flooding between August 19 and 25, 2026.

The warning follows projections of rising water levels in several rivers, which could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities across the affected states.

According to the government, the states at high risk of flooding during the period are Kaduna, Niger, Taraba, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno and Cross River.

Others are Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Plateau.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) urged residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly communities located on floodplains, to relocate to safer and higher ground immediately.

The agency also called on state and local governments in the affected areas to activate their early-warning systems and emergency response plans to minimise the impact of possible flooding.

Residents in the affected states have been advised to remain vigilant, monitor official weather and flood alerts and take precautionary measures as water levels continue to rise.
