Edo Queens have won the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League title after a dramatic comeback against Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies in Saturday’s final in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian champions twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw in regulation time before defeating Ampem Darkoa 4-1 on penalties to clinch the regional trophy.
Ampem Darkoa took an early lead through Beline Nyarkoh in the second minute, but Edo Queens responded two minutes later when Doosuur Anastasia Atume equalised.
Nyarkoh restored the Ghanaian side’s lead in the 74th minute with her second goal of the match.
Just when Ampem Darkoa appeared set to claim the title, Edo Queens produced a late comeback, with Oluebube Umejiaku scoring in the 94th minute to force the match into a penalty shootout.
Edo Queens kept their composure from the spot, converting four penalties while Ampem Darkoa scored just one.
The victory secured the Nigerian champions the WAFU-B title and a place in the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
