53-Year-Old Nelly Monday Convicted After Pleading Guilty to Environmental Offence

A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State.

Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught dumping refuse in a drain during rainfall.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said she was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.

Following her plea, the court convicted and sentenced her to one month in prison.

LAWMA warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.

The authority said such practices constitute environmental offences and pledged to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction offenders across Lagos.

LAWMA urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved channels, warning that blocked drainage channels can contribute to flooding.
