…describes viral claims linking President Tinubu to constitutional changes as fake and misleading

The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North through constitutional amendments.

In a statement issued on Thursday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga described the report as false, misleading and politically motivated.

According to the Presidency, the viral story was fabricated to create tension and destabilise the country ahead of future elections.

The statement said there was no truth to claims that President Tinubu intended to sponsor constitutional amendments aimed at changing the country’s name or removing Sharia law in the northern region.

Onanuga alleged that the report was the handiwork of desperate politicians seeking to stir political unrest and create division among Nigerians.

The Presidency also denied claims that the President planned to transmit a constitutional amendment bill allegedly called “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly.

According to the statement, constitutional amendments in Nigeria involve a rigorous legal process requiring approval by both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsement by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly.

The presidential aide maintained that President Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms and improving the welfare of Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political agendas.

The Presidency further urged Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified and inflammatory information as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to intensify.
