Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has presented a certificate of recognition and staff of office to King Charles Macpepple Jaja, Jeki VI, formally recognising him as the first-class Amanyabo of Opobo.

Fubara said the presentation marked the completion of the process that followed the death and burial of the late King Douglas Jaja, Jeki V, and the selection and coronation of his successor.

The governor, who hails from Opobo, explained that his absence from the monarch’s coronation was due to his participation in the Federal Government delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly and should not be interpreted politically.

He recalled that the late monarch was involved in a legal dispute that lasted more than 27 years, adding that his administration and other stakeholders contributed to resolving issues surrounding the selection and installation of the new king.

Fubara congratulated King Charles Macpepple Jaja and urged him to unite all sections of the kingdom, including those who were unsuccessful in the selection process.

He also charged the monarch to prioritise education, healthcare and the development of small and medium-scale businesses, while maintaining a firm stance against criminality.

The governor further urged Opobo title holders and wealthy indigenes to contribute tangible development projects to the kingdom, challenging them to ensure their collective efforts produce visible results within the next year.

Fubara assured the new monarch of the state government’s continued support and urged the Opobo Council of Traditional Rulers and other stakeholders to work with him for the development of the kingdom.

Responding, King Charles Macpepple Jaja pledged to promote peace, unity and development in Opobo and Rivers State.

He described his recognition as a sacred trust and promised to discharge his responsibilities with justice, peace and dignity, while building on the legacy of King Jaja, who established Opobo about 156 years ago through trade and diplomacy.
