Oyo Governor Demands Transparency Over 30-Day Petrol Discount Policy
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has challenged the Federal Government to release its pricing template for the 30-day petrol discount programme, urging it to explain how the proposed prices were determined.
Governor Makinde, who is also the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), made the call on Saturday at the party’s North-East 2027 Town Hall Meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The governor said Nigerians deserved access to the calculations behind the policy so they could examine the figures and offer alternative solutions where necessary.
“We are asking for only two things. We don’t want long ‘turenchi’ [fancy grammar and talk],” Governor Makinde said, referring to comments by the Minister of Finance on the government’s petroleum price modulation policy.
“Just release to Nigerians your pricing template: how you arrived at your figure, and let Nigerians be aware, they are not dumb, look at your pricing templates, and if they have a better solution, they will present it,” he added.
Governor Makinde’s comments came days after the Federal Government announced a 30-day petrol discount programme in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), aimed at easing fuel costs nationwide.
The policy has drawn criticism from opposition figures, who have questioned its sustainability and described it as a possible return of fuel subsidy through another route.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration scrapped the longstanding petrol subsidy in 2023 and unified the foreign exchange market as part of its economic reforms. While the measures have been backed by some economists, they have also contributed to rising living costs and economic hardship for many Nigerians.
Petrol prices have risen to about ₦1,400 per litre, compared with approximately ₦830 before the war in the Middle East, according to the report.
