NUT members demand immediate rescue of victims, urge government and security agencies to intensify efforts.

Members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday staged protests across the country over the continued captivity of teachers and pupils recently abducted in Oyo State. The demonstrations followed a peaceful rally by civil society groups in Ibadan on Monday, where participants called for the immediate rescue of the victims.

In Ibadan, teachers gathered at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in the American Quarter area, where union leaders addressed members on the purpose of the nationwide action before embarking on a peaceful procession through major parts of the city.

Carrying banners and placards with various inscriptions, the protesters sang solidarity songs and used megaphones to draw public attention to the plight of the abducted victims. Union leaders emphasized that the protest was not intended to be confrontational but rather a call on the government, security agencies, and all stakeholders to act swiftly in securing the release of those still in captivity.

They described the rally as an appeal to the conscience of the nation and a reminder of the constitutional responsibility of authorities to protect lives and property, stressing that teachers and schoolchildren should never become targets of criminal activities.
