Commission says fraudulent social media links are phishing scams aimed at stealing personal information.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against a social media message promoting a free National Identification Number (NIN) correction portal, describing it as a phishing scam designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

In a public advisory issued on its official X handle, the commission warned citizens not to engage with the fraudulent links, stressing that they are not connected to any official NIMC service. The agency also reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from unauthorized access.

NIMC urged individuals seeking to update or correct their NIN records to use only its official self-service portal or visit authorized enrollment centres nationwide. The commission advised the public to rely on verified communication channels for information regarding identity-related services and to avoid clicking suspicious links circulating online.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over cybercriminals using fake websites and social media posts to steal personal data and identity information from unsuspecting victims.
