Starmer says “my work is done” as Andy Burnham becomes Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade following a Labour leadership transition
Sir Keir Starmer has formally resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing an end to his two-year tenure and paving the way for Andy Burnham to assume office as the country’s new leader.
In a farewell address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer reflected on his time in office, expressing pride in his administration’s achievements and confidence in his successor.
“I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved,” Starmer said, adding, “my work is done.”
The outgoing prime minister pledged his support to Burnham as the Labour Party prepares for a new chapter under fresh leadership.
Following his speech, Starmer travelled to Buckingham Palace, where he formally tendered his resignation to King Charles III. Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King accepted his resignation during a private audience and also received Lady Victoria Starmer.
Shortly afterward, Burnham was invited by the monarch to form a government, officially becoming the United Kingdom’s new prime minister. The former Greater Manchester mayor and newly elected Labour leader is expected to unveil his Cabinet and outline his administration’s priorities in his first address outside Downing Street.
Burnham’s appointment marks another significant moment in British politics, making him the seventh person to occupy Number 10 since the Brexit referendum in 2016. He secured the Labour leadership following Starmer’s announcement last month that he would step aside amid mounting pressure from within the party.
Among the first changes under the incoming administration, Prisons Minister Lord Timpson resigned earlier on Monday as Burnham began reshaping the government. Reports indicate that several key Cabinet appointments are expected to be announced in the coming hours.
Starmer leaves office after leading Labour to power in 2024 and overseeing a period marked by economic reforms, political challenges, and growing calls for a leadership transition within his party.
