Sam Mbakwe International Airport to Shut From October 20 Ahead of Christmas Travel Season

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, from October 20, 2026, for about 25 days to allow for major runway rehabilitation.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the closure was necessary to improve aviation safety and operational efficiency ahead of the Christmas travel season.

The rehabilitation, a joint project between the Federal Government and the Imo State Government, will involve repairing deteriorated runway sections, treating surface cracks, filling potholes, resurfacing and extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.

Keyamo said he had consulted Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and other stakeholders in the South-East, who agreed on the need for the temporary shutdown.

Passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the period have been advised to contact their airlines for updates on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
