New policy harmonises SSCE registration fees as government raises charges for internal candidates nationwide.
The Federal Government has approved an increase in the registration fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for internal candidates, effective from 2027.
Under the new policy, the registration fee for both examinations has been harmonised at ₦50,000 per candidate. NECO’s fee will rise from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, while WAEC’s registration fee will increase from ₦27,000 to the same amount.
The approval was contained in a memo dated June 18, 2026, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Adeniji Ibrahim, on behalf of the Minister of Education.
According to the ministry, the decision followed a meeting with examination bodies on March 31, 2026, where the need to review examination fees was discussed. The minister subsequently directed both WAEC and NECO to adopt a uniform registration fee for their SSCE examinations.
The new fee will take effect from the 2027 NECO SSCE Internal Examination, with WAEC expected to implement the same harmonised registration charge.
