1,195 Senate and 3,213 House Candidates Listed as Campaigns Gather Momentum
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections, with a total of 4,408 candidates contesting seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.
An analysis of the candidate lists published by the electoral commission shows that 1,195 candidates are vying for Senate seats, while 3,213 are contesting for the House of Representatives.
Of the total, 3,965 candidates are male and 443 are female.
The Senate race comprises 1,080 male and 115 female candidates, while the House of Representatives list has 2,885 male and 328 female candidates.
The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) recorded the highest number of female candidates, fielding 11 for the Senate and 42 for the House of Representatives.
INEC’s release comes as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6.
The commission had on Saturday also released the final list of 18 presidential candidates and their running mates.
Those on the presidential list include President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Oyo State Governor Oluseyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Sandy Ojang Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Other candidates include Omoyele Sowore, Adewole Adebayo, Sunday Okereke, Sunday Adenuga, Peter Agada, Abbas-Bin Aliyu, Yusuf Kabiru, Rufai Adekunle Omo-Aje, Adebisi Olusoji and Nwanyanwu Daberechukwu, among others.
The two female presidential candidates are Ada Elizabeth Frederick Okwori of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Nkem Esther Okereke of the National Rescue Movement (NRM).
