Convict Ordered to Pay ₦5,000 Compensation and Listed on Sexual Offenders Register
The Jigawa State High Court No. 11, sitting in Ringim, has sentenced 50-year-old Abubakar Biniya to 10 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old girl.
Justice Muhammad El-Usman delivered the judgment on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after the prosecution called six witnesses and tendered five exhibits, including a medical report.
The court found that Biniya committed the offence in January 2024 at Galadanchi Quarters, Ringim Local Government Area.
Justice El-Usman said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judge considered the convict’s plea for leniency and his status as a first offender before imposing the 10-year sentence.
The court also ordered Biniya to pay ₦5,000 in compensation to the victim and directed that his name be entered in the Jigawa State Sexual Offenders Register maintained by the Ministry of Justice.
It further ordered the public announcement of his conviction on radio under the relevant provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2021.
The parties have three months within which to appeal the judgment.
Meanwhile, the court discharged three other defendants facing separate charges after the prosecution failed to establish their cases.
They were Sale Kurma, 55, and Mansur Ahmed, 22, both charged with rape, and Haruna Ahmadu, who faced charges of criminal
