Isaac Convicted of Defiling Girl in School Toilet, Ordered to Be Listed on Sex Offenders Register

The Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a former teacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil of El-Bossaa Nursery and Primary School, Epe.

Justice Rahman Oshodi also ordered that Isaac’s name be entered in the Sex Offenders Register in line with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law.

The court found that Isaac sexually assaulted the girl in the school’s male toilet on March 10, 2022, after allegedly luring her inside under the pretext of fetching a piece of paper.

The child later told her father about the incident. Her mother also testified that she found blood on the girl’s pants and vagina when she examined her that evening.

A medical examination conducted at the Mirabel Centre more than two months after the incident found vaginal findings which the examining doctor said were consistent with penile penetration. The court held that the medical evidence corroborated the child’s account.

Justice Oshodi also rejected Isaac’s defence that he had remained at the school gate to collect pupils, noting that his own evidence placed him at the school when the offence occurred.

The judge found the child’s testimony clear, detailed and consistent and held that it was supported by other evidence, including her immediate complaint, her mother’s testimony, the medical findings and evidence placing Isaac at the school.

Isaac was convicted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which provides for life imprisonment for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.

At sentencing, Isaac pleaded for leniency, but the judge said he had betrayed the trust placed in him as the child’s former teacher and had used that relationship to lure her into the toilet.

The court further directed the prosecution to take immediate steps under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law, 2022, following a complaint by the victim’s mother that she and the child had allegedly faced continued intimidation from school staff.

Justice Oshodi, however, stated that the court was not making any finding on the intimidation complaint.
