Government Restates Commitment to Teachers’ Welfare, Safer Schools and Quality Education
The Oyo State Government has announced the release of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and entrance examination results for admission into the state’s Schools of Science.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, said the results were available to candidates and other stakeholders through designated channels provided by the ministry.
He congratulated successful candidates and urged them to remain focused and disciplined, while encouraging those admitted into the Schools of Science to maximise the opportunities offered by the specialised institutions.
Olayiwola also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to teachers’ welfare, safer schools and quality education, charging principals of public secondary schools to prioritise students’ safety and wellbeing.
Speaking at a resumption meeting with principals at Lagelu Grammar School, Agugu, Ibadan, the commissioner said teachers would continue to receive support through training and retraining, timely promotion and prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements.
He directed principals to properly man school entrances, monitor perimeter fences, clear overgrown bushes and establish functional Guidance and Counselling Units and Anti-Bullying Clubs. He also directed schools to sensitise students on drug and sexual abuse and provide safe channels for reporting concerns.
The commissioner warned public schools against collecting unauthorised levies and directed them to organise regular Open Day programmes to strengthen parental involvement in students’ academic development.
On continuous assessment, Olayiwola said attendance, notebooks, Open Day participation, textbooks, school-based tests and teacher-based tests should each carry 10 marks, with the resulting 60 marks divided by two to produce the 30 marks obtainable for continuous assessment.
He further directed principals to use the approved NERDC curriculum, integrate ICT into teaching where facilities are available and encourage students to use the Nigeria Learning Passport.
Olayiwola also reiterated the prohibition of mobile phones and other mobile devices during school hours, warning that devices seized from students should only be released to their parents or guardians. He added that supervisors, invigilators and school heads involved in examination malpractice would be sanctioned.
The Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and TESCOM, Bamidele Oyinloye and Sherifat Abimbola, respectively, urged principals to uphold discipline, integrity, professionalism and students’ welfare.
ANCOPPS President Babatunde Fasasi and NUT Chairman Hassan Fatai commended the engagement and pledged support for efforts to improve education, while calling for sustained attention to teachers’ welfare, promotion and career progression.
