Brake failure involving a container-laden truck leaves one dead and disrupts traffic along the outbound section of the expressway.

A physically challenged beggar has been killed in a multiple-vehicle crash at Car Park C along the outbound section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) said the accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday and involved a container-laden Mack truck with registration number AGL 374 XX, a loaded DAF truck with registration number AKM 476 XB, and a white Toyota bus with registration number AKD 137 YA.

According to TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, eyewitnesses said the Mack truck suffered brake failure while approaching a turning point and rammed into vehicles negotiating the bend. The truck also struck a physically challenged beggar in a wheelchair, killing him instantly.

“According to eyewitness accounts, the MACK truck had a brake failure and hit vehicles negotiating a turning, and a beggar on wheelchair, slicing his body,” Akinbiyi stated.

He added that the crash severely affected traffic on the outbound Lagos route, while operatives of TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force were at the scene managing the situation.

Efforts to evacuate the affected vehicles and restore the free flow of traffic were ongoing as of the time of filing this report.

The incident comes barely a day after multiple crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway left one person dead and two others injured, causing heavy traffic gridlock on both carriageways of the busy highway.
