NDPC Gets New Abuja Headquarters as Agency Reports N12bn Revenue and 27,000 Jobs
President Bola Tinubu has approved the allocation of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)-recovered property to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) as its new headquarters.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Monday during the commissioning of the facility in Abuja.
Tijani said the President approved the property after the NDPC complained that its expanding responsibilities and international profile were not matched by a befitting permanent office.
He described the conversion of the recovered asset into a government facility as an example of returning assets recovered from corruption to productive use.
“An asset that is recovered on behalf of the Nigerian people has been returned to productive use for the protection of Nigerian people,” Tijani said.
The minister noted that the NDPC faced funding challenges during its early years, including difficulties meeting salary obligations, before Tinubu provided financial support to stabilise the agency.
He also said President Tinubu signed the Nigeria Data Protection Act shortly after assuming office in 2023, giving the commission stronger legal authority to protect Nigerians’ privacy and personal data.
The NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, Vincent Olatunji, said the commission received approval for the property from the EFCC in July 2025, while renovation commenced in March 2026.
Olatunji said the commission, which started with about 12 employees in 2022 without dedicated funding, had since licensed 356 Data Protection Compliance Organisations and helped create more than 27,000 jobs.
He added that the commission had generated over ₦12 billion in three years, while the data privacy and protection ecosystem was worth more than ₦18 billion.
Olatunji also disclosed that over 66,000 Nigerians had enrolled in the commission’s virtual privacy academy, while 220 training programmes had benefited 99,370 people.
The commission has also established 17 data privacy clubs in universities, recruited 6,176 student ambassadors and reached more than 250,000 Nigerians through its engagements.
The NDPC said its new headquarters, located in Mbora District, Abuja, has about 56 office spaces and represents a major expansion from the agency’s previous locations.
Tijani urged stronger data protection as Nigeria’s digital economy expands, particularly with the growing use of artificial intelligence, saying privacy, data governance and responsible technology use would become increasingly important.
