President Bola Tinubu has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its efforts in combating economic and financial crimes and corruption, saying the agency has justified the confidence placed in it.

President Tinubu, represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, spoke on Friday, October 2, 2026, during the commissioning of a new EFCC Zonal Directorate in Awka, Anambra State.

According to a statement by the EFCC, the President said the commission’s convictions, asset recoveries and other achievements demonstrated its performance and aligned with his administration’s focus on economic reform and good governance.

“Supporting the EFCC is not particularly difficult. The agency has consistently demonstrated that the confidence reposed on it is well founded. Without mincing words, the evidential proof of the EFCC’s success speaks loudly in convictions secured, assets and properties recovered,” he said.

The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, said the new directorate would combine enforcement with corruption prevention by engaging government institutions, businesses, financial institutions, professional bodies, schools, markets, civil society organisations and communities.

Olukoyede said that between October 2023 and July 2026, the commission received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases, filed 14,476 cases in court and secured 10,872 convictions.

He said the commission also recorded recoveries of N1.23tn, $684.48m, £373,905.78 and €9.34m, among other currencies.

The EFCC chairman added that institutional reforms introduced during the period included new guidelines on arrest and bail, a review of sting operations, and the establishment of departments and units focused on fraud risk assessment, security, immigration and visa matters, and cybercrime response.
