President commends athletes after 24-medal haul secures seventh-place finish and Africa’s top ranking in Glasgow.
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria on its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the country’s medal haul as a historic achievement and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to developing sports.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and administrators for representing Nigeria with honour, dignity and pride throughout the competition.

President Tinubu said Team Nigeria’s impressive performance reflected the athletes’ hard work, resilience and perseverance, noting that the experience gained at the Games would serve as a strong foundation for greater success in future international competitions while inspiring more young Nigerians to embrace commitment, discipline and national service.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to invest in sports development by strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities and creating more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to excel on the continental and global stage. He further commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their continued efforts in supporting athletes and advancing sports development in the country.
Team Nigeria concluded the 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, finishing seventh on the overall medals table and emerging as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games. The President urged the athletes to remain focused and continue striving for excellence in future competitions.
