President Describes Late Thespian as a Towering Figure in Nigeria’s Creative Industry
President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors, whose career spanned theatre, television and film in Nigeria and abroad.
The President noted that after training at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Jacobs built a successful career in British television and international film before returning to Nigeria, where he became a major figure in the country’s film industry.
President Tinubu said the late actor’s exceptional talent, discipline and dedication to his craft inspired generations of actors and filmmakers and contributed to the development and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
He also highlighted Jacobs’ ability to bring depth, dignity and authenticity to his roles, earning him recognition in Nigeria and internationally.
Jacobs received several industry honours during his career and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
President Tinubu described his death as a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of performing arts enthusiasts.
The President said Jacobs’ body of work would continue to influence generations, adding that the nation recognised the contributions of creative practitioners to Nigeria’s cultural identity, global image and economic development.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues in the Nigerian film industry and the wider creative community.
He prayed for the repose of the late actor’s soul and strength for his family.
