Lawmakers commend President Tinubu, hail rescue of abducted pupils and teachers, and urge improved welfare for security operatives.
The Senate has cautioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making statements capable of undermining the efforts of the Federal Government and security agencies in combating terrorism and kidnapping.
The warning followed the governor’s recent call on the United Nations to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The Senate’s position was contained in resolutions adopted on Tuesday after considering a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele on the successful rescue of 39 abducted pupils and seven teachers held captive for over 50 days.
Lawmakers commended President Bola Tinubu for directing security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to secure the victims’ unconditional release after they were abducted by heavily armed terrorists on May 15, 2026.
The Senate noted that the operation, which culminated in the victims’ rescue on July 10, also led to the arrest of eight suspected terrorists and the neutralisation of several others.
It described the mission as evidence of improved professionalism, inter-agency collaboration and operational efficiency among the Armed Forces, intelligence services and other security institutions.
The upper chamber, however, acknowledged the sacrifices made during the rescue operation, noting that Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome lost their lives, while Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain sustained injuries.
Lawmakers urged the Federal Government to ensure the prompt payment of death benefits, insurance claims, pensions and other entitlements due to the families of the deceased officers.
The Senate also called for enhanced welfare, training, equipment and logistics support for security agencies and urged authorities to intensify efforts to rescue other Nigerians still in captivity across the country.
The caution against Governor Makinde was introduced by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey during plenary.
