State says ex-military officer succumbed to diabetes and hypertension despite ongoing rescue efforts.
The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, said the former military officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during captivity.

He noted that despite coordinated efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release, the rescue mission was unsuccessful.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement read.
The government described the incident as a painful loss to the state and the nation, noting that the retired officer dedicated years of service to Nigeria.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the bereaved family and described the development as a “dark moment” that highlights the urgent need to intensify the fight against insecurity.
He assured residents that the state government remains committed to tackling banditry and will work closely with federal authorities and security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The government also urged citizens to keep the family of the late officer in their prayers, describing his death as a national loss.
