FG Assures Rescue of Abducted Pupils, Unveils Stronger Anti-Terror Strategy

Information Minister says Tinubu has deployed specialised rescue teams, approved 1,000 forest guards and intensified security reforms.

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the safe return of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo and Borno states remains a top priority, saying all security agencies have been mobilised to secure their release.

Speaking at a special national security briefing in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the deployment of specialised rescue teams and approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen security in vulnerable communities.

Idris said the government is pursuing an intelligence-led approach involving the Armed Forces, DSS, Police, NIA and other security agencies, while also advancing reforms such as state policing to address evolving security threats.

He highlighted recent gains against terrorism, including the neutralisation of hundreds of insurgents, the rescue of kidnapped victims, the disruption of terrorist networks in the North-East and the conviction of four terrorists linked to the 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church.

The minister also revealed that more than 500 terrorism suspects are currently facing trial, with 386 convictions already secured, describing the development as a major milestone in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Urging citizens to support security agencies with credible information, Idris said defeating terrorism requires a united national response, stressing that “terrorism has no tribe, religion or political affiliation.”
