Governor says aerial surveillance is providing critical intelligence as efforts continue to secure the safe release of victims kidnapped in Oriire LGA.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sustained its aerial surveillance operations in support of ongoing efforts to rescue teachers and pupils abducted from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
This was disclosed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh, on June 5, 2026.

According to a statement issued by NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Governor Makinde revealed that the Air Force swiftly deployed an aerial surveillance platform immediately after the abduction was reported, providing vital intelligence to aid ongoing search-and-rescue operations.
The governor explained that intelligence gathered from the surveillance missions has continued to assist security agencies in monitoring developments and coordinating efforts aimed at securing the safe release of the victims.
Makinde appealed to residents to remain patient and supportive, assuring them that all available resources are being deployed to ensure a successful outcome. He also praised the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their prompt response and unwavering support during the crisis.
The governor noted that the Air Force made the surveillance platform available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at the NAF Base in Lagos.
He further disclosed that the state procured the aircraft following consultations with the Nigerian Air Force to guarantee access to maintenance support, engineering expertise, and pilot training.
Makinde expressed confidence that once fully operational, the aerial assets would significantly strengthen security operations across Oyo State and neighboring states.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh conveyed the solidarity of the Nigerian Air Force with the government and people of Oyo State. He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at securing the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils.
Suleh also commended the state government for its continued support toward NAF projects and infrastructure development within Oyo State.
“The NAF remains committed to working closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property while supporting efforts to address security challenges across the country,” the statement said.
The abducted victims, comprising teachers and pupils from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, were kidnapped on May 15 during a deadly attack by armed bandits.
Tragically, one of the teachers was reportedly killed while in captivity, sparking widespread outrage and protests by teachers’ unions and civil society groups in Ibadan, who demanded urgent action from authorities.
Last week, the House of Representatives called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the victims are rescued alive.
In response to the incident, President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a special rescue team to support ongoing rescue operations in the state.
