Reps Summon Service Chiefs, Finance Minister

Lawmakers demand accountability on security funds as fresh kidnappings and rising insecurity spark nationwide concern.

The House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Defence, Defence Chief Christopher Musa, the service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, and the Director-General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, to provide details of funds released to security agencies over the last six months.

Also invited are the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, and the Director-General of the NIA, Mohammed Mohammed.

The resolution followed debates on rising insecurity across the country, including recent mass abductions in Oyo and Borno states that triggered nationwide protests by the Nigerian Union of Teachers and other civil society groups.

Lawmakers also called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the recruitment of forest guards in states facing serious security challenges, similar to the initiative recently approved in Oyo State.

The House expressed concern over the growing wave of kidnappings and attacks, stressing the need for greater accountability in the deployment of security resources and stronger measures to protect citizens.

Following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State, President Tinubu had dispatched a high-powered delegation led by Femi Gbajabiamila, alongside the Inspector-General of Police and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to assess the situation and coordinate rescue efforts.

The President also approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and directed a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the release of abducted victims.

The House maintained that enhanced oversight, improved funding transparency and stronger security strategies are essential to tackling the country’s worsening security challenges.
