Armed gunmen storm Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu LGA, killing three persons as security forces launch manhunt for fleeing attackers.

Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning when bandits invaded Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing three persons, including the vice principal of the school and a 6-year-old child.

The attack, which occurred at about 10:00 a.m., plunged the community into mourning and heightened fears over worsening insecurity in the area.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, noting that the attackers arrived in large numbers on about 40 motorcycles with the suspected intention of abducting students and other residents.

According to the statement, the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba “A” Division immediately mobilised a joint security response after receiving distress calls. Personnel from the police division, the Police Mobile Force, tactical units, military operatives, and local vigilante groups were deployed to confront the attackers.

The security operatives engaged the bandits in a gun duel, forcing them to flee into surrounding bushes. Authorities said one of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange of fire, while a member of the joint security team sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

The Command confirmed that three persons were killed in the attack: Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and Sunday Ayele, aged 6.

Police also noted that there is currently no conclusive evidence of a successful mass abduction, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered sustained bush-combing operations and intensified patrols in the affected area as security agencies continue efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and provide credible information to assist ongoing security operations.
