New Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology to boost technical education and Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa.
The approval, announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, is part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen technical education, develop skilled manpower and unlock Nigeria’s vast solid minerals potential.

President Tinubu directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant agencies to begin the processes required to implement the conversion in line with existing laws and regulations.
According to the statement, the decision followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, who advocated for a specialised institution to support the development of the state’s rich solid minerals sector and Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.
The new university is expected to offer world-class education, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing and emerging technologies while producing highly skilled professionals for the nation’s mining and industrial sectors.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, job creation and national prosperity, describing the upgrade as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda to align tertiary education with Nigeria’s development priorities.
