Governor blames sabotage and vandalism for structural defect as security agencies are directed to protect public infrastructure ahead of the state’s governorship election.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the immediate repair of the damaged section of the newly commissioned ₦8.52 billion Lameco Flyover in Osogbo and directed security agencies to strengthen surveillance around public infrastructure across the state.

The 672-metre flyover, inaugurated on July 1, 2026, is part of the state’s ₦100 billion multi-flyover infrastructure master plan aimed at improving transportation networks across Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Owode-Ede and Ikirun.

The directive followed the development of a depression on a section of the flyover after a prolonged downpour, barely three weeks after its commissioning, forcing authorities to temporarily cordon off the affected area.

Speaking after an evening inspection of the site alongside engineers from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Governor Adeleke commended the swift response of the ministry’s engineers in commencing repair works.

The governor disclosed that he received a briefing from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Engr. Bashiru Bello, on the circumstances surrounding the incident, which he described as an act of vandalism and political sabotage.

“It is unfortunate that some saboteurs, whose sole objective is to undermine our developmental strides and destroy the legacy of this administration, would resort to attacking public infrastructure built with taxpayers’ resources,” Adeleke stated.

He called on security agencies to ensure adequate protection of public facilities across the state and bring those responsible for the damage to justice.

According to the governor, public infrastructure belongs to the people of Osun State and must be protected from acts capable of undermining the state’s development efforts.

Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure, insisting that it would not be deterred by actions aimed at impeding the state’s progress.

The incident comes amid heightened political activities ahead of Osun State’s off-cycle governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
