Amendment creates Executive Secretary position, requires government approval before tuition increases.

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures to strengthen the regulation and management of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.

The bill was passed during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which held public hearings and consulted stakeholders before presenting its recommendations.

Speaking after the bill’s passage, Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, described the amendment as a major step toward improving the administration of private and voluntary schools in Kano State. He commended lawmakers for their contributions throughout the legislative process.

The amended legislation creates the office of Executive Secretary to enhance the management of the board overseeing private educational institutions.

It also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain government approval before increasing tuition or other fees, a move aimed at protecting parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes while ensuring proper regulatory oversight.

The amendment followed extensive consultations with education stakeholders during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before its final passage.
