Commissioner promises professional policing as Governor Adeleke demands reforms, neutrality and improved police-civilian relations.
The newly deployed Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Zungura, has pledged to work with the state government and other stakeholders to restore peace, strengthen security and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Zungura made the commitment on Monday when he led senior officers of the Osun State Police Command on a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo.
The Commissioner assured residents that his leadership would be guided by professionalism, impartiality, fairness and respect for the rule of law. He also promised to establish a stronger relationship between the police and residents while prioritising the protection of lives and property.
His pledge came as Governor Adeleke raised concerns over police-civilian relations and called for urgent reforms within the command, citing unresolved post-election tensions and recent security incidents in the state.
The governor specifically raised concerns over a police operation in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, which he said resulted in the deaths of two people. He called for disciplinary action against the Divisional Police Officer in the area, alleging that the officer had been implicated in the incident.
Governor Adeleke urged the new Commissioner to rebuild public confidence by addressing conduct that had created perceptions of police partisanship. He also called for a stronger working relationship between the government and police command and the reorganisation of some operational units he alleged had been compromised.
The governor further requested the command’s full participation in meetings of the Osun State Security Council, saying this was necessary for effective security coordination and intelligence sharing.
He also appealed for the release of some Accord Party members he described as political detainees and urged the police to halt further arrests of the party’s members.
Governor Adeleke assured Zungura that the state government would support police operations without political conditions, stressing that his administration only sought fair and professional policing.
Zungura, who has more than three decades of policing experience, joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 and previously served as a Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja.
He was among 17 senior officers promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in July 2026 before his deployment to Osun State.
