… Oyo Governor Makinde Fires Back at APC Candidate Alli Over Streetlight Criticism, Says Nigerians Still Await Power Solution
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Sharafadeen Alli, to stop attacking his administration and focus instead on campaigning against the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate, Bimbo Adekanmbi.
Makinde made the statement on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The governor was responding to criticism of his administration’s use of diesel-powered generators to operate some streetlights in the state.
Makinde questioned why Alli was focusing on the activities of the current administration instead of selling his own political programme to voters ahead of the 2027 election.
“He should focus his energy on convincing the people of Oyo State to support him despite the hardship brought upon them by his party. He should focus on the APM governorship candidate,” Makinde said.
The governor also defended his professional record after Alli questioned the use of diesel generators by an administration headed by an engineer.
“I am an engineer and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers — meaning I have excelled in my chosen career,” Makinde said.
Makinde attributed the reliance on diesel generators for some streetlights to Nigeria’s wider electricity crisis and challenged the APC-led Federal Government to address the country’s power supply problems.
He also referenced President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise on electricity, arguing that the situation would have been different if the country’s power challenges had been resolved.
Makinde subsequently promoted the credentials of the APM governorship candidate, Adekanmbi, describing him as a certified accountant and Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
The governor’s remarks came as thousands of APC members formally joined the APM at the same event, which also featured political mobilisation and performances by Fuji artistes.
